Eco-activist Greta Thunberg and her like-minded youth movement Aurora filed a lawsuit against the Swedish state on Friday, November 25.
According to the plaintiffs, it does not fulfill the constitutional requirement to promote sustainable development that leads to a favorable environment for present and future generations.
Before taking their complaint to the district court, more than 600 eco-activists, the oldest of whom is 26, marched through Stockholm. Thunberg carried a cardboard placard that read: "Now we're suing the state."
The Aurora movement had been preparing a lawsuit against Sweden for two years. According to its members, the country's new, center-right government has neglected climate protection.
