A total of 46 people died in the railway accident in Greece, the representative of the Hellenic Fire Service, Vassilis Vartakoyannis, informed Thursday.

"The search and evacuation work at the place of the railway accident continues even today. Firefighting operations are currently focused on the [passenger train’s] restaurant car, which was crushed by the collision with a passenger car. Seven burnt bodies were taken out from there this morning. At the moment, the confirmed number of dead is 46," Vartakoyannis said.

According to him, in order to continue the search, it is necessary to cut the metal with special devices and remove the metal parts of the derailed train cars.

At around midnight Wednesday, there was a head-on collision between a freight and a passenger train between Athens and Thessaloniki, not far from the city of Larissa.
