YEREVAN. – The earthquakes have become more active throughout the world, including Armenia, Emergency Situations Minister Armen Yeritsyan stated during Thursday’s Governmental session.

He informed that the population senses tremors measuring over magnitude 3, but, in the case when 3-5 such quakes were previously registered in Armenia on an annual basis, fifteen such seismic activities were registered in 2011, and, even though 2012 has just begun, three earthquakes—measuring more than magnitude 3—are already registered in the country.

And in connection with earthquake prevention, Yeritsyan specifically underscored the need to re-operate the observatory located nearby Garni village. The observatory is not operating for the past twenty years, and the Minister asked for Governmental assistance for its re-operation. At present, the observatory is being used by an American organization.

PM Tigran Sargsyan instructed the interested parties to commence new talks for the observatory’s re-operation.
