The Armenian issue’s advocates will aspire for US official recognition of the Armenian Genocide, but this time without the prior optimism, American Armenian historian, Professor Richard Hovannisian—who is chairholder in Modern Armenian History at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)—told Armenian News-NEWS.am

In his view, the advocates of the Genocide’s recognition at the same time will seek new avenues, such as the return of Armenian churches and property to the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople and other organizations.

“On the other hand, the Turkish lobby and government will make use of their powerful tactical, military, and commercial advantages to prevent those efforts, until the matter is closed after April 24. Neutralizing the Armenian voice, until the April 24 fervor comes to pass. They will use the same strategy also for the [Genocide’s] 100th anniversary,” Hovannisian said.

According to him, the Turkish side believes—and not without a reason—that the time is working in their favor.

“In spite of this, the defenders of the Armenian issue will continue their fight,” Richard Hovannisian added.
