YEREVAN. – Newly elected president of Iran Hassan Rouhani used to voice harsh criticism against Azerbaijan and Turkey during the presidential campaign, Armenian expert on Iranian studies Vardan Voskanyan said.

Rouhani stated Azerbaijan is posing a threat in terms of security of the Islamic Republic, he added.

“He also criticized Turkey in relation to ungrounded claims for regional leadership. However, no statements or calls referred to Armenia,” he added.

Vardan Voskanyan noted that Armenia-Iran relations are not dependant on changes in Iranian leadership. The relationship is sable and is developing dynamically.

In the context of possible normalization of US-Iran relations, Azerbaijan will no longer be a foothold of anti-Iranian propaganda.

On the whole, Voskanyan believes there are no prospects for improvement of Azerbaijan-Iran relations in the near future.

“This is conditioned by several factors: anti-Iranian sentiments in Baku, senseless claims for north-western territories of Iran, multilateral cooperation with Israel,” he added.
