YEREVAN. – Public transport fares in Armenia’s capital will rise by 1.5-2 times starting from August 20, head of municipality’s transportation department said.

The bus fare will make AMD 100 instead of 50, while minibus fare will increase from AMD 100 to 150. The underground fare will remain the same, Henrikh Navasardyan told reporters.

Despite the fact that business entities suggested to raise fares up to AMD 170-200 depending on the route, the municipality considered it inappropriate, since the buses and minibuses often repeat part of the route. In case of different prices, the passengers will prefer cheaper, which in turn will lead to the termination of a business entity.

In addition, municipality officials promised that the price increase will lead to improved quality of service. The business entities will gradually replace the vans with buses.
