YEREVAN. – The actions of Armenian police must be condemned, opposition MP Alik Arzumanyan said commenting on detention of numerous activists.

The MP noted that according to the Constitution of Armenia, the state must respect the dignity of its citizens, everyone has the right to express his opinion and to hold peaceful public protests.

Several hundreds of protesters took to the streets on Monday protesting against Armenia’s joining Customs Union. The protests coincided with the visit of Vladimir Putin to Armenia.

“On December 2 the rights of citizens of Armenia were violated. At least 110 people, including one minor, were illegally detained. This lawlessness is worthy of condemnation from local and international human rights organizations,” Arzumanyan said.

Arzumanyan noted that most regrettable is that the authorities do not even realize that they turned Gyumri into “an outpost”, “occupied” the center of Yerevan, creating traffic jams, and provoked hatred against Putin.
