A new war between Armenia and Azerbaijan will greatly differ from the Karabakh War of the 1990s.

Wayne Merry, Senior Fellow for Europe and Eurasia at the American Foreign Policy Council in Washington, DC, told the aforesaid to the Armenian service of the Voice of America.

“A new war will be based on high-tech weapons, when the parties will try to hit each other from long range. But this clash will not lead to a solution unless the ground forces encounter,” Merry said.

He added that many people assume that war is inevitable.

“The parties will probably want to start a short war waiting for the intervention by the great powers. But the war will be much more severe to solve the problem by military means. I doubt that such a military clash will lead to a political solution,” Merry stated.

The analyst noted that even though the parties do not possess the same military capabilities, they also do not possess the same military skills and, in this respect, the war cannot have a great decisive importance for any of the sides.

“What is more, there can be a great defeat for both of them,” he added.
