The U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan is concerned over unexpected extradition and arrest of Azerbaijani journalist Rauf Mirkadirov, RFE/RL reported.

In the statement the Embassy said they are worried over assumptions that Mirkadirov was arrested either for criticism against Azerbaijani government or his participation in people-to-people contacts within Karabakh peace process.

The contacts within public diplomacy contribute to peaceful settlement of Karabakh conflict, the Embassy said.

Prominent Azerbaijani journalist was arrested on the charges of espionage on April 19. He is accused of working with Armenia's special services. Prosecutor's Office claims he had met with the representatives of Armenian intelligence and carried out their instructions.
