The venders of a large open-air souvenir market in Yerevan said they heard the shots but first thought a movie was filmed.
One of the venders said she saw two young men rushing to a vehicle and fleeing the site.
Deputy chief of police Hunan Poghosyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am that the preliminary version will be made public in several hours. An investigation is underway, he said, adding that no one had been arrested yet.
Five people injured in a shooting were immediately taken to the hospital, four of them being in severe condition.
Albina Badalyan, one of those injured in a shootout, covered her grandson to protect him from the bullet, her daughter told the Armenian News-NEWS.am correspondent.
“Hearing the shots, she covered her grandson to protect him. My brother was there, and he ordered everyone to lie on the ground,” the woman said.
