Georgia Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili commented on the incident that occurred nearby the Holy Etchmiadzin Armenian Church in the Georgian capital city Tbilisi, and demanded that the criterion of the respective criminal case be changed.    

“The investigation is conducted pursuant to Article 125 (beating) of the Georgian Criminal Code. But after the inquiries by the Public Defender’s Office of Georgia and the study of the video recording of the incident, it is confirmed that there could be hooliganism, organization of group of violence, and causing damage to health.  

“At the same time, the law enforcement agencies of Georgia need to investigate all the circumstances of the case, including those which could point to an ethnically motivated crime,” Gruzia Online news agency of Georgia quoted the Georgian ombudsman as saying. 

According to the statement by the Diocese of Georgia of the Armenian Apostolic Church, on the evening of July 19, a group of people carried out a planned attack against the clergy of the Holy Etchmiadzin Church.
