YEREVAN. – Armenia’s de jure recognition of the independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), or Artsakh, could have taken place in 1992 and in May 1994, but, unfortunately, it did not happen.

Armenia’s first Human Rights Defender, “Against Legal Arbitrariness” NGO Executive Director, public activist, and Artsakh expert Larisa Alaverdyan stated the above-said at a press conference on Tuesday.

In her words, it is indispensable to assess the literate, profound, and international law-abiding decision on the declaration of NKR independence.

“The September 2 [, 1991,] decision was the next step, but now in the new world order. Unfortunately, the diplomatic, political, and statal thinking of Armenia could not see to it that NKR’s de jure recognition would follow the de facto recognition. At least it had to be done so that the Karabakh conflict would not have been renamed Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict,” Alaverdyan noted.

Although, as per the expert, everything is not yet lost, it is possible to make use of all opportunities right now by petitioning to international organizations.

“I assure you that if Azerbaijan had at least 10 percent of our arguments, Armenia would have been deprived of the right to vote in all international organizations,” Larisa Alaverdyan stressed.
