YEREVAN. – Armenia experiences formation of qualitatively new civil society, head of Against Illegal Arbitrariness NGO Larisa Alaverdyan said.

The rudiments of civil society were formed in Armenia in 1988, when the Karabakh movement emerged. Although the development of civil society has not stopped, the process has not yet reached the level where citizens with an active position can influence decision-making, she said during a press conference on Friday.

However, some signals prove the Armenian society is already on the way to it. As an example, Alaverdyan cited “I am against” initiative as an example, adding that the initiative managed to achieve contradictory, but still a certain decision of the Constitutional Court on pension reform.

Asked whether President Serzh Sargsyan has a role in the development of civil society, Alaverdyan noted that in comparison with the second president Robert Kocharyan, who supported violence to tackle the problems, the incumbent president has refrained from the use of force that has a positive effect on the civil society.
