Irrespective of the results of referendum, the Scottish people still got the right to determine their own destiny, President Serzh Sargsyan told reporters at the Vatican.

“One more nation exercised the right to decide their fate with the free expression of will. The referendum results are simple, and the collective decision of the Scottish people should be respected,” Sargsyan said.

“I can not but express admiration for the British government and their people, who have chosen the democratic methods to settle the issue, although it was obvious this is not that easy,” President emphasized.

“In early 90s the people of Nagorno-Karabakh also tried to decide their own future through peaceful means, through a referendum, but the Azerbaijani authorities responded to it by pogroms in Baku and Sumgait, mass deportations, and in the end by war.

It is clear that the referendum is gradually becoming one of the most important legal mechanisms for the peaceful resolution of ethnic conflicts. It is no coincidence that in 20 years, the cornerstone of a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict that was offered by OSCE Minsk Group is the right to decide people's fate through a referendum”.
