GYUMRI. – Hundreds of small and medium-sized business merchants of the central market of Armenia’s Gyumri city on Tuesday have suspended work, closed their shops, and are protesting against the new Law on Turnover Tax.

Hundreds of merchants have blocked the central streets of the city, and they are demanding to meet with the head of the Tax Inspectorate of the Shirak Region, the Armenian News-NEWS.am reporter informed from the location.

At present, Harutyun Arshakyan, the Deputy Governor of Shirak, is attempting to convince the merchants to open the roads and not to block traffic, since the new law applies to everyone and this matter cannot be resolved in this manner.

The merchants, however, are resolute, assuring that they are prepared to keep the market closed for several days, unless the Shirak Tax Inspectorate head comes and answers to their questions.

Pursuant to the new Law on Turnover Tax, which will come into force on Wednesday, a business enterprise will be warned at first, and, subsequently, it will be fined for not submitting a document on its commodity circulation. The large businesses, however, often do not provide documents to the small and medium-sized enterprises concerning the products.
