The Federation Council of the Russian Federation has ratified the Eurasian Economic Union (EaEU) Treaty, reported ITAR-TASS news agency of Russia.

According to the source, the aforesaid decision was adopted unanimously by the 140 deputies.

“The ratification of the treaty is a landmark event,” said Council Chairwoman Valentina Matviyenko.

The presidents of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan had signed a treaty, on May 29 in the Kazakh capital city of Astana, regarding the establishment of the EaEU. This agreement will enter into force on January 1, 2015.

Kazakhstan and Belarus are expected to ratify the treaty on Thursday and on October 7, respectively.

Armenia likewise seeks accession to the Eurasian Economic Union.
