YEREVAN. – The Armenian law enforcement’s pushiness in forcing journalists to reveal their sources has caused an alarm in the last quarter of the year.

The Chairman of the Committee for the Protection of Freedom of Speech (CPFS), Ashot Melikyan, noted the above-said at a press conference on Friday, as he presented their 2014 third quarter (July-September) report.

“The Special Investigation Service forced the journalists of the Hraparak and Ilur.am websites to reveal the sources of their news; this is concealed censorship.

“In addition, two alarming incidents were recorded during the three months. The National Assembly [NA] chief of security used physical violence, at the NA entrance, against the journalist of the A1+ television.

“The other incident occurred with the journalist of the Haykakan Zhamanak newspaper, when the head of the Armenian community in Kazakhstan, Artyusha Karapetyan, had hindered the journalist’s professional activities,” Melikyan said.

He added that the climate of impunity is to be blamed for all these incidents in Armenia.

The CPFS chairman also noted that eight cases of pressure against journalists in Armenia were recorded in the last quarter of the current year.
