YEREVAN. – The opposition in Armenia does not have an ideological basis, and a fight, which has no ideological basis, cannot be considered political.

Former Deputy Defense Minister and former Deputy Prime Minister Vahan Shirkhanyan stated the aforesaid at a press conference in the National Assembly on Tuesday.

In his conviction, the ongoing fight is solely to assume power, and a true opposition has not existed in the country.

“The opposition is a political organization based on ideological provisions,” Shirkhanyan added.

But the other speaker of the press conference, Ruling Republican Party of Armenia MP Lernik Aleksanyan, did not agree with Vahan Shirkhanyan, and noted that the opposition has always existed and will continue to exist in the country.

“The question is around which axis this opposition unites. If there are authorities, there are also masses that are dissatisfied with them. If dissatisfied masses exist, it means there is also an opposition. If the opposition parties unite around shared objectives, the body politic will believe in them,” the MP said.

Aleksanyan’s words, however, the mistake of the Armenian opposition is that these forces were unable to set a common goal, and each of them had its own objectives.
