The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Friday adopted a resolution on the prevention of genocide which was introduced by the Permanent Mission of Armenia to UN.

Armenia was joined by 64 countries that are included in all regional groups of the UN Human Rights Council.

In a resolution (A/HRC/28/L.25) on the prevention of genocide, adopted without a vote, the Council recommended that the General Assembly designate 9 December as the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of Genocide in order to raise awareness of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and its role in combatting and preventing the crime of genocide.

The Council invited the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide to an interactive dialogue with the Human Rights Council at its thirty-first session on the progress made in discharging his duties.

The resolution condemns the intentional public denial or glorification of crimes of genocide and crimes against humanity as defined by international law, and notes with concern that public denials create as risk of further violations and undermine efforts to prevent genocide.
