YEREVAN. – Commemorations of the 100th anniversary of World War I massacres of Armenians are very important, Ms Anne Brasseur, the president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), told the press briefing on Monday at the National Assembly of Armenia.

Brasseur said after WW I war, the war itself was stopped, but no lasting peace was provided for. After WW II, several institutions were built, including the Council of Europe, to prevent such atrocities from ever happening again.

“Unfortunately, we were not able to prevent other serious conflicts, but we must learn from the past, We can build a common future together, and It is our responsibility, as politicians of today, to prevent new conflicts. This means, first of all, to recall the past. We have a responsibility before the future generations, to find a common understanding in order to prevent future atrocities,” PACE President said during a briefing.

Prior to Armenia, Ms Brasseur had visited Turkey, both Istanbul and Ankara and refugee camps in the southeast of the country. She praised the commitment of Turkish authorities to provide relief for refugees from Syria and Iraq. Turkey’s commitment of $5,5 bln is particularly remarkable compared to the meager $250 mln donated by the international community, she added.
