YEREVAN. – The European Parliament’s Armenian Genocide resolution was a result of active work and appeals by Armenia.

Opposition MP and former Foreign Minister Alexander Arzumanyan stated the aforementioned at Friday’s parliamentary hearings.

In his words, this resolution is of great importance, and this is an important opportunity to present this matter to the world in the broadest possible manner.

“[But] the resolution was not unprecedented, since the European Parliament had already made such a decision [back] in 1987,” Arzumanyan added.

The ex-FM, comparing the two resolutions, noted, however, that this is the first time that Armenia acts as a subject in this process.

“We[, Armenia,] have repeatedly criticized various countries for making use of our tragedy for [their] own interests.

“And the European Parliament had adopted that resolution in 1987, after Turkey had submitted an application for EU accession.

“At the time, the resolution was actually aimed at delaying this process, since the European Union was not ready to accept Turkey,” Alexander Arzumanyan noted.
