The world-renowned French Carrefour hypermarket chain has provided clarifications to the Armenian State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition (ASCPEC), and with respect to sugar prices.

To note, several queries were made at the National Assembly, and during the recent presentation of the ASCPEC program for 2015.

One of these issues raised was the possible anti-competitive practices between the Carrefour Armenia and Yerevan City supermarket chains, especially with regard to sugar imports and sales prices.

The Carrefour representatives noted, however, that they have never had any problems with the Yerevan City chain stores. They also stated that it is more profitable for the company to purchase sugar at wholesale prices in Armenia and to resell it.

As for the fact that sugar is sold at a lower price in the Carrefour supermarkets in Georgia than in Carrefour Armenia, the latter’s management noted that this is due to having qualitatively different products. They noted that the sugar sold in Armenia has a higher quality than the sugar sold in Georgia.
