The International Energy Charter Ministerial Conference took place in Netherland’s capital Hague on May 20-21. Armenian delegation headed by Energy and Natural Resources Deputy Minister Levon Shahverdyan, also took part in the conference.

The aim of the conference was to establish the International Energy Charter, adopted and signed by 75 and 65 countries (including Armenia) respectively.

During the conference Levon Shahverdyan participated in the discussion on making the energy supply ecologically clean, presenting Armenia’s experience, achievements, existing challenges and future projects in that area. He noted that currently alternative energy constitutes more than 9 per cent of Armenia’s electric generation, being mainly made up of HPPs. With the view of progressive development, the state pays special attention to wind, solar and geological sources of power development, aiming to achieve over double growth of alternative energy generation in the coming ten years.

The purpose of the International Energy Charter is to foster international cooperation aimed at the development of energy and the use of the newest technologies in that sphere, encouraging countries to contribute to the development of alternative energy sources and gradually introduce eco-friendly technologies.

Within the framework of the conference, Shahverdyan had a meeting with Ukraine’s Energy and Coal Mining Minister Demshichin.  Questions on the cooperation in the area of energy development were discussed.
