YEREVAN. – An event to mark the launch of the project “Strengthening Health Care and Human Rights Protection in Prisons in Armenia” will take place on June 2 at 10:00 at “Ararat” ballroom of Armenia Marriott Hotel in capital city Yerevan.

The duration of the project is 24 months; it is expected to be completed by February 28, 2017. The budget of the project is 900,000 EUR. This project is launched in Armenia under the European Union and the Council of Europe’s (CoE) Partnership Co-operation Framework in the Eastern Partnership Countries for 2015-2017 (http://eap-pcf-eu.coe.int). The €33.8 million-worth cooperation agreement was signed last December to promote human rights, democracy and the rule of law in six Eastern Partnership countries, including Armenia.

The project aims at strengthening human rights in prisons in Armenia through better provision of healthcare, including mental health care. Among the project’s objectives is also improving the legal and institutional framework of healthcare in prisons, training their staff and helping the Government of Armenia to improve material conditions of prisons’ healthcare units, with a special focus on those prisons that were highlighted as the most problematic in the latest reports by the Council of Europe’s Committee to Prevent Torture.

Key speakers will include Hovhannes Manukyan, Minister of Justice of Republic of Armenia; Natalia Voutova, Head of Council of Europe Office in Yerevan; and Hoa-Binh Adjemian, Head of Cooperation Section of Delegation of European Union to Armenia.
