U.S. Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group is confident that the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders do not want war.

Asked what will happen if Baku decides to start a war, Mr. Warlick said that this would be the worst option and would definitely lead to the expansion and deepening of the escalation of the conflict with the involvement of other parties that would violate the mediation.

“So we are trying to achieve respecting of the ceasefire and avoiding violence,” he said in an interview with Turan agency.

Asked whether the parties are closer to the settlement now or five years ago, the diplomat said several times there were opportunities for peaceful settlement during the talks, but they were not used.

There is a new opportunity now and it should be used, he said, adding that the conflict can be solved if there is political will.

“The alternative is war. I do not think that people of the two countries want it,” he added.

The diplomat said he had talked much to presidents Aliyev and Sargsyan, and they want peaceful settlement, this is the reason the Minsk Group helps them.
