YEREVAN. - The first Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) unit needs to be completely removed from operation, Vahram Petrosyan, General Director of   Armenian Scientific Research Institute for Nuclear Plant Operation “Armatom” told Armenian News – NEWS.am.

Because the key issue on the agenda of the country’s nuclear power remains the construction of a new power plant unit, no active discussions on the first unit are being held.

“But in the future this issue may be considered, since the first nuclear plant unit is in the so-called “cold regime.” Its full removal will require additional work,” Petrosyan said.

After Armenia’s Spitak earthquake, both units of the Armenian NPP were stopped in February-March 1989. The second unit was re-launched in 1995.
