YEREVAN. – The number of suicides and suicide attempts has increased in Armenia.

Head of the Census and Demography Division at the National Statistical Service, Karine Kuyumjyan, said the abovementioned at a press conference on Friday.

She added that the majority of those that committed suicide, or attempted to commit suicide, were unemployed. 

A total of 397 suicides and suicide attempts were recorded in the first half of the current year, and this is an increase of 74 cases, as compared to the same time period in the previous year.

A total of 285 of the aforementioned 397 cases were suicide attempts, and 112 of them had ended in suicide. To note, 51 of these victims were female, whereas 246 were male.

The majority of suicides in Armenia were committed by hanging. But suicide attempts were also recorded by way of jumping from a high ground, and using sharp and piercing tools and firearms, or other types of weapons.
