YEREVAN. - Excise tax rates on alcohol in Armenia and the rest of the Eurasian Union (EEU) states need to be leveled, Hakob Hakobyan, MP from the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) and shareholder of “Beer of Yerevan” beer plant told Armenian News – NEWS.am, commenting on the bill of changes in the Law on Excise Tax.

According to him, this will help ensure equal competition in the alcohol market between the manufacturers of all the EEU states. “Currently the excises are lower in Armenia. Thus, the Russian manufacturers are interested in selling their products in Armenia, paying fewer excises. In case the tax is leveled, it will become easier for the local companies to work. Of course, to level most probably means that we must raise the excise to the EEU level not the other way round. That is, our alcohol will rise in price. But leveling is still necessary, for the purpose of competition,” Hakobyan said.

Out of all alcoholic beverages, the bill proposes to change the excise only on vodka. The current rate (30% but not less than 500 AMD for 1 l) is proposed to raise up to 55% but not less than 550 AMD (approx. $1,16).
