YEREVAN. – The majority of the people in Armenia will say “yes” to the constitutional reform in the country.

Ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) MP Mkrtich Minasyan stated the abovementioned at a press conference on Monday.

In his conviction, those that fight against this reform should not forget that they used to speak about a need for completely proportional elections and parliamentary governance in Armenia.

“In fact, the [country’s] political forces will be given the opportunity to manifest themselves, but now, they are displeased again,” said Minasyan. “There is something else here.”

“There are political forces that consider it dishonorable for them to run in community elections. [But] life will force all of us to realize that running in elections is normal.”

In the RPA deputy’s words, the residents of Armenia will confidently accept that constitutional reforms will result in more dynamic and effective governance in the country.

Mkrtich Minasyan also commented on the concerns that the draft constitutional amendments will lead to a one-party system in Armenia, as in Soviet times, and noted: “I see no similarity at all. The RPA cannot become the Communist Party; this is just nonsense.”

Chapters 1 through 7 of the new draft Constitution of Armenia were made public on July 15. Accordingly, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance. In addition, the new draft Constitution specifies a completely proportional voting system.
