YEREVAN. – Attorney Tigran Yegoryan is convinced that the current constitutional amendments are made in Armenia so as not to lose power.

The lawyer noted, at a press conference on Tuesday, that it was the very Specialized Committee on Constitutional Reforms that actually revealed this objective.

“In reality, there is one goal behind the [current constitutional] amendments, [and] from which the authorities clearly don’t deviate,” said Yegoryan. “The ultimate goal is to keep power.”

In the attorney’s words, amendments again were made to the Constitution of Armenia, and which, however, changed noting in the country’s societal life.

“The authorities in Armenia are illegitimate; a change of power through elections is impossible in Armenia,” added Tigran Yegoryan. “Therefore the authorities don’t have legitimacy to raise the issue of constitutional amendments.

“If the authorities don’t exercise effective governance, first of all, the government, not the Constitution, must change.”

Chapters 1 through 7 of the new draft Constitution of Armenia were made public on July 15. Accordingly, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.
