YEREVAN. - New malting plant in Armenia’s Gyumri city is ready to get the entire quality barley of the republic, Ashot Baghdasaryan, General Director of “Beer of Yerevan” CJSC (and plant co-investor) told Armenian News – NEWS.am. The other co-investor is “Gyumri Garejour” LLC.

Earlier, the investors purchased barley from Hungary and Germany, which they tried out in Armenia’s climatic conditions.

“Now it is up to the farmers to decide. Firstly, relevant quality should be ensured; we thoroughly familiarized the farmers with our demands. Secondly, the prime cost could be lowered if the small enterprises could unite into cooperatives, but they aren’t doing this,” Baghdasaryan said.

Anyway, the plant is ready to agree on the price proposed by the farmers, only given that the quality doesn’t suffer. “On those conditions we’re ready to buy actually everything the farmers bring us,” he said.

In the Soviet period, malting plant was part of Gyimri’s beer and malting plant, which used barley imported from other republics. Armenian beer plants have been importing malt since the 90s.
