YEREVAN. - The first applications for the domain names in the zone .հայ have already arrived, Vice President of “Internet Society of Armenia” NGO Grigori Saghyan told Armenian News – NEWS.am.
Applications have been received since September 1. Owners of registered brands and trade names will have a priority right to register them in the names of their websites before December 1. During this period, state authorities will also be proposed to register their names, both full and short ones.
Relevant self-government authorities will be able to submit applications for geographical names as a matter of priority (for instance, Yerevan Municipality can apply for երեւան.հայ, etc).
The issue peculiar to the Armenian language, namely the one related to the classic and new orthography, hasn’t yet been completely solved (the first one is mainly used by Eastern Armenians, the second one being used by Western ones).
“When we proposed the ministries and other state authorities to register their names, we were obliged to warn them that the letter “և” isn’t supported. Thus, they will most probably choose the classic orthography version “եւ” (combination of Armenian letter “ye” and the 34th letter of Mashtots’ alphabet “vyun”).
