YEREVAN. – The constitutional amendments provide ample opportunities for the opposition forces.
Member of the Ruling Republican Party of Armenia National Assembly (RPA NA) Faction, Sukias Avetisyan, noted the above-said at a press conference on Wednesday.
“For the first time we will elect the leaders of the main institutions by a 3/5 majority, which means the person will be elected also by the opposition,” said the RPA MP. “I don’t think any [political] party, or coalition force [in Armenia], will be able to have a 3/5 majority.”
Publicist Karine Hakobyan, however, argued that the new draft Constitution does not give the opposition any opportunities.
“The political system [in the country] is so created that we do not have a political opposition,” she noted. “We, instead of resolving this matter, are destroying the opposition by introducing the institution of a stable majority.”
The NA on Monday voted on and passed the decision on agreeing to hold a referendum on the draft amendments to the Constitution.
Pursuant to the new draft Constitution, Armenia will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.
