YEREVAN. – Armenia has always been in favor of criminal punishment for the denial of the Armenian Genocide.

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shavarsh Kocharyan, told the aforementioned to reporters, after Thursday’s Cabinet meeting. He stated this commenting on the respective bill that was introduced Wednesday at the Russian State Duma.

Whether or not the Russian MPs will approve this bill is up to them, Kocharyan added. But, in his words, at any rate, Armenia welcomes the fact that, in 1995, Russia recognized the Armenian Genocide.

And to the query on how the current strain in Russia-Turkey relations—in connection with Turkey’s shooting down a Russian warplane Tuesday on the Turkish-Syrian border—would affect Armenia, the deputy FM responded: “On the one hand, the matter refers to our ally [Russia], and on the other hand—to our immediate neighbor [Turkey]. Therefore we need to keep close watch on all possible developments of events.”
