YEREVAN. – First night of the around-the-clock sit-in, which was called at Liberty Square in Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan by the opposition “New Armenia” Public Salvation Front which fights against the proposed constitutional amendments, passed peacefully.

“New Armenia” member Gevorg Safaryan, who represents the opposition Founding Parliament initiative, informed about the aforesaid to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“About two dozen people remained [here] at night,” Safaryan noted. “There were no problems with the police.”

Opposition Heritage Party Chairman and former FM Raffi Hovannisian, and Founding Parliament senior representative Jirair Sefilian, however, did not stay overnight at Liberty Square.

Another “New Armenia” rally is slated for Wednesday 6pm, and it again will be followed by a march.

The referendum on Armenia’s constitutional amendments will be conducted on Sunday.

Pursuant to the proposed amendments, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance, and conduct completely proportional parliamentary elections.

The opponents of these amendments, however, consider them to be primarily the authorities’ attempt to hang on to power.
