Customs officers at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport stopped a man who was trying to illegally get 43 reptiles across the border. The suitcase of the Amsterdam-Moscow flight passenger contained 40 lizards and three turtles, Russia’s Federal Customs Service website reports.

The turtles were in cardboard boxes, while the lizards were placed in transparent plastic cups. The animals were flying to Moscow from Mexico in transit through Holland and in   the plane’s luggage compartment, the statement says.

The man explained that he had bought the reptiles at a market and was going to use them to replenish his collection of reptiles.

Now the specialists have to carry out an expert examination, which will determine the value of the animals, as well as whether they fall within the scope of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
