YEREVAN. – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has no official information about a large number of Armenian prisoners, the ICRC delegation in Armenia said in response to the respective query by Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Chairman of the State Committee for Refugees and IDPs of Azerbaijan, Ali Hasanov, had stated that there are a large number of Armenian prisoners in Azerbaijan.

“According to the ICRC data, there is one Armenian POW in Azerbaijan at this moment; the ICRC representatives visit him,” the ICRC delegation stated. “He can exchange family-related information with his relatives. The ICRC does not have official information about other [Armenian] prisoners [in Azerbaijan].”

The only Armenian prisoner in Azerbaijan is Nagorno-Karabakh Republic citizen Arsen Baghdasaryan.

Aside from him, the family of Vahan Martirosyan, who has fled Armenia, is in Azerbaijan. But they are in the neighboring country under rather strange circumstances and, in all likelihood, of their own free will. This family, however, has neither a prisoner nor a captive status in Azerbaijan.

Head of the working group of Armenia’s Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons, Armen Kaprielyan, on Monday informed that the Armenian side is making all efforts to clarify the situation, and against the backdrop of the aforesaid statement by the Azerbaijani official.
