8 persons suspected of an assault on elderly Istanbul Armenian couple’s house were detained in Turkey’s Trapzon city upon trying to leave the country, Governor of Istanbul Province, Vasip Şahin, said.

He noted that the aim of the assault on the house in Istanbul’s Şişli  district was robbery, Turkish Anadolu news agency reports.

“The police prosecuted the suspects and detained them in Trapzon. They were looking for ways to leave the country. 7 out of 8 detainees are Armenian citizens, one being Turkish citizen of Armenian descent,” the Governor said.

Turkish Milliyet also mentioned the names of the suspects: Artur A., Aram E., Serge B., Marianna E. Lida B., Nargiz B., Armine M., Cristina M.

One of the suspects worked at the gold shop owned by the elderly couple, the newspaper writes.

On February 6, unknown persons broke into the house of elderly Armenian couple, stole expensive jewelry and large amount of money. They also tied up the couple and left.

Before the law enforcement authorities arrived at the scene, the tied 85-year-old husband had choked up, while his wife was saved.
