Iran’s involvement in talks on Karabakh conflict is currently inappropriate.

Karen Khanlaryan, Armenian MP at the Iranian Parliament, told the aforementioned to Armenian News – NEWS.am correspondent.

According to him, it’s not the first time Iran has come up with such proposals. “Iran MFA has been talking about this long ago, and, generally, the Iranian side has always expressed readiness to come out with a mediatory mission. This positive approach per se deserves high appreciation. Iran supports historical and cultural ties with both sides – Armenia and Azerbaijan. But considering the past practice, it should be noted that the changes in the mediation format of the OSCE Minsk Group can bring about quite a lot of difficulties and postpone the achievement of the final agreement,” Mr Khanlaryan stressed.

Turkey also came up with proposals on mediation, but unlike Iran, Turkey’s stance is not unbiased. “Since the very first days of the conflict, Turkey closed the border with Armenia on a unilateral basis, actually declaring war to Armenia. Therefore, Turkey’s mediation proposals cannot be considered as impartial. In contrast, Iran’s stance is based on the necessity to establish peace, and I highly appreciate this position,” the MP said.

According to him, Iran’s involvement in the negotiation process on Karabakh conflict is technically impossible, since any new format of mediation first of all supposes discussion of documents, which will cause a long delay in the outcome of the talks. “But as a political approach, this is the best manifestation of good-neighborly relations,” Karen Khanlaryan added.

Iran MFA spokesman Hossein Jaber Ansari earlier stated that Iran is ready to serve as a mediator between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the settlement of the Karabakh conflict.
