Leaders of the western countries face a paradox in their relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin— the more he confronts and defies them, the better the Russian public likes him, Bloomberg reported.

According to the agency, the measures are taken against opposition and an image of  "a good Czar" protecting a nation surrounded by enemies is cultivated on TV.

Nevertheless, now, when Russia is in the longest recession for the last two decades,  Putin's approval rating continues to fall. This month, it reached 80% - this is the lowest indicator in the last two years. But this is still the rating which the western leaders can only dream about, Bloomberg noted.

At the same time, Russians historically prefer to support force methods, and it’s a highly conservative society in which even those who dislike Putin see no real alternative to him, the agency added.
