Japan's upper house of the parliament adopted amendments to the law that forbids women to remarry after divorce within six months. The session was broadcasted on the Internet. The purpose of the law that was adopted at the end of the 19th century was to avoid disputes of fatherhood, if the child is born within 6 months after the divorce.

According to the amendment 6 months turns into 100 days, if the wife submits a certificate that she is not pregnant. Last year in December Japan's Supreme Court evaluated the law as unconstitutional. The court's decision has caused a stir in the society, since today the application of the law means that a few months after the divorce the former husband is considered the father of the child, whereas the biological father had to start the adoption process.
