During his visit to Armenia on June 24-26, Pope Francis wanted to go to the border with Turkey, making a symbolic gesture in favor of its opening. But the project was cancelled, Vice Rector of the Pontifical Armenian College in Rome., Krikor Badichah stated, Italian La Stampa reports.

“The project was as follows: to go there and open the border. But everything went to blazes,” Badichah stated. Nevertheless, “everything can be expected” from Pope Francis. And the Turkish border is also not far: it is in 10 minutes from other places, which Francis will visit.

The opening of the Armenian-Turkish border is a topic which is especially close to the Pope. “This issue is in my heart. It will be wonderful if the Armenian-Turkish border opens,” Pope Francis said on 30 November 2014, responding to the journalists’ questions after returning from Istanbul.
