YEREVAN. – A member of “Founding Parliament” Khachatur Gichyan was detained  on a charge of assistance to members of the group which made the armed capture of police regiment in Yerevan.

As Armenian News - NEWS.am  reported quoting Gichyan’s lawyer Tigran Sargsyan, his client is accused of the seizure of buildings, arms trafficking.

 “According to the charge, Gichyan provided a truck to the armed group. Gichyan doesn't admit his guilt”, the lawyer noted.

A group of armed men stormed into a Yerevan police patrol regiment, on early morning on July 17, and took several police officers hostage. Deputy regiment commander Artur Vanoyan was killed, and four other officers in addition to one of the attackers were wounded during a shootout.

Negotiations are still underway to release all hostages and end the armed resistance.

The gunmen demand the release of Jirair Sefilian, an imprisoned opposition activist.
