YEREVAN. – Political prisoners should be released as a result of political struggle, not thanks to declaring amnesty, Armenia’s opposition Heritage Party member Hovsep Khurshudyan said at a press conference on Friday.

“Of course amnesty is welcomed,” added Khurshudyan. “Although it’s clear for what objective the Armenian authorities would do this; elections are ahead.”

Heritage’s spokesperson, Davit Sanasaryan, for his part, stated that amnesty is not a justification, and the criminal cases, which are opened into the recent incidents in capital city Yerevan, should be dropped on the basis of absence of corpus delicti.

“These people have been jailed for their political views,” noted Sanasaryan. “They should come out one day earlier. We shall not wait that [President] Serzh Sargsyan, or the authorities, display kindness.”

September 21 marks the 25th anniversary of Armenia’s independence. And political and social circles are discussing the matter of a possible amnesty on this occasion.
