GYUMRI. – Armenia’s 2016 Summer Olympics champion Greco-Roman wrestler Artur Aleksanyan, and silver medalist weightlifter Gor Minasyan were welcomed back in their hometown Gyumri with songs, dances, and fireworks.

The Olympians’ relatives as well as numerous Gyumri residents assembled at Vardanants Square, informed the Armenian News-NEWS.am reporter in the town. 

A huge “polar bear,” which symbolizes Aleksanyan, was placed in the center of the square.

The two Armenian medalists at Rio 2016 also delivered remarks at the event.

“I’m strong with you, with my town, with my country, and this victory is not only mine; it belongs to us all,” said Olympic champion Artur Aleksanyan. “We won together.”

“We are strong with you,” stated silver medalist Minasyan, for his part. “If it weren’t for you, we would not have achieved such success.”

Subsequently, the Rio 2016 gold and silver medalists walked around Vardanants Square, greeted and took photos with fans, and then headed off to their homes under fireworks.

Armenia was represented at the 2016 Summer Olympics that were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with 32 athletes. The country took the 42nd spot in the team medal standings, with one gold and 3 silver medals.
