YEREVAN. – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made a very diplomatic statement regarding Turkey’s role in the settlement of the Karabakh conflict, but, in fact, he said nothing new

Caucasus Institute Director, political scientist Alexander Iskandaryan, stated the above-said at a press conference on Monday.

In his words, Lavrov stated that if some improvement is achieved in resolving this conflict, this will impact Armenian-Turkish relations.

“But, this is impossible,” added Iskandaryan. “We also know that if there is some improvement in Armenian-Turkish relations, this will in some way affect the Karabakh conflict. But, this also is impossible today; and he [i.e. Lavrov] said this, too.

“There are the OSCE [i.e. the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe] Minsk group co-chairs, who deal with the matter. And if the other Minsk Group members—including Turkey—also are able to help, thank God! It’s said quite diplomatically. It’s rather difficult to imagine something new on this matter.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had argued that Turkey could play a positive role by ensuring deblockage of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh), and normal cooperation in the region.
