The Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project is a test of EU cohesion, said the Polish deputy FM Konrad Szymański , reports the Financial Times.

In August 2016, the project partners declined Poland’s proposal to establish a joint venture. According to Szymański, that decision is an illustration that the companies involved in the project were not able to refute the Polish side concerns regarding the pipeline. As a result, the arguments against the Nord Stream-2 are more persuasive, he concludes.

The project, which previously only seemed contradictory, now resembles a Trojan horse that could weaken the economy and poison relations within the EU, Szymański writes.  He urged the EU to adopt a tougher stance on the project. According to him, the European Commission must ensure the absolute protection for the most vulnerable EU countries. It should be either a decision to completely freeze the project or to limit its impact on the European market, he concludes.
