ISTANBUL. – At Wednesday’s Spiritual Council meeting, which was held in the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople, a decision was made to elect a new patriarch.

Armenian News-NEWS.am has learned from the patriarchate that the discussants conferred on the present-day situation at the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople, in connection with the health problems of Patriarch Mesrob Mutafyan.

The clergy members participating in this meeting concurred that, in actual fact, Mutafyan is unable to render spiritual service as Patriarch ever since 2008, and therefore respective decisions shall be made in accordance with the rules of the Armenian Church.

As a result, and with a majority of votes, Patriarch Mesrob Mutafyan was deemed patriarch emeritus, and it was decided to send the letter, with respect to holding an election for a new patriarch, to the relevant Turkish authorities.
