The word “Armenian” is associated with Charles Aznavour in Switzerland and it became popular more than 60 years ago. It is both surprising and pleasant, the French chansonnier of Armenian origin, Armenian Ambassador to Switzerland Charles Aznavour stated in an interview with Armedia.

According to him, the Swiss are very close to Armenian people, just like the French are to Armenians in France. “Armenian politicians always maintain dignity in Switzerland or France. They are sincere, with a good sense of humor and this is very important in terms of a dialogue, and making impression on one’s country. The evidence thereof is the three Armenian Presidents. Armenian people are considered “exemplary Diaspora” in France. In Switzerland, Swiss people are closer to Armenians than they are to Turks,” he said.

As to Armenia-Switzerland political cooperation, Aznavour stressed that the two states are on good terms and are improving bilateral relations. “Switzerland is one of the first states to recognize the Armenian Genocide, which they did in 2003. The recognition process in other countries was prolonged. Former French President Jacques Chirac significantly contributed to its recognition. He was a man of great influence outside France as well, this is the reason Switzerland followed their lead,” Aznavour concluded.
