YEREVAN. – The leader of Armenian opposition, former Armenian president Levon Ter-Petrosyan has never called for violent overthrow of the government during his rallies, said MP from ruling Republican Party Hakob Hakobyan, commenting on Friday’s opposition rally in Yerevan.

On the contrary, during the last rallies Ter-Petrosyan called for legal change of power, he added. The MP believes rallies are aimed at showing public discontent and pointing the difficulties people are faced with.

“As a citizen I believe it is right,” he said.

Replying to a question, whether such position will lead to expected changes, Hakobyan said that President of Armenia ordered all officials to solve the problems people are concerned with. By the end of June Armenian Government should plan its activities so that people will see an improvement of their economic conditions.

When asked whether the authorities will meet requirements of opposition by April 28, Hakobyan recommended waiting.

“Authorities have recently released political prisoners,” he added.

The oppositional Armenian National Congress has presented three demands to the authorities: to release political prisoners, to allow opposition holding rallies in Liberty Square, and set up an independent committee to investigate deaths of 10 people during the tragic events of March 1,  2008.
